Octopath Traveler is a turn-based role-playing game from Square Enix, first released in 2018, that helped define the studio's signature HD-2D art style by blending pixel-art character sprites with three-dimensional, diorama-like environments. Players choose from eight travelers, each with a distinct story, class, and Path Action for interacting with townsfolk, and can weave all eight journeys together across the land of Osterra. Battles use the Break and Boost system, where exploiting enemy weaknesses staggers foes and stored Boost Points let you unleash powerful chained attacks.
This record covers the native Nintendo Switch 2 version, which Square Enix has confirmed for an October 1, 2026 launch in the West, following an earlier July 2026 release in Japan. The Switch 2 edition costs $59.99 on its own and is available both digitally and as a physical Game-Key Card, with a digital bundle pairing it with Octopath Traveler II listed at $74.99. Square Enix has stated the Switch 2 versions run at improved resolution and frame rate compared with the original Switch release, but there is no paid or free upgrade path for existing owners and save data does not transfer between the Switch and Switch 2 versions.
Fans have been waiting for a way to play the game that launched the HD-2D revival on Nintendo's newest hardware, where the sharper visuals and smoother performance are meant to show the art direction at its best.
