Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is the newest entry in Square Enix's long-running monster-taming spin-off series, where the goal is to befriend creatures pulled from across the Dragon Quest universe, raise them, and fuse them into new companions through the series' signature synthesis system. This installment casts you as Bianca and Nera, the two prospective brides from Dragon Quest V, who set out together to find the fabled Leaves of Life after both their fathers fall ill. Their search leads them to the ravaged Kingdom of Witherwood, where a creature named Fluffy grants them the power to recruit monsters. More than 500 monsters are promised, mixing returning franchise favorites with brand-new designs.
The game is set for a simultaneous global launch on Thursday, December 3, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Square Enix has confirmed a $59.99 Standard Edition, alongside a $94.99 Digital Deluxe Edition that bundles 48 hours of early access plus four DLC packs, and a $219.99 physical Collector's Edition featuring figurines of Bianca, Nera, and Debora. Pre-orders are open across storefronts, with early-purchase bonuses including an Adventure Starter Set and, for digital buyers, a Hearty Meat Set.
Anticipation is high because this is the first fresh mainline Dragon Quest Monsters game since 2023's The Dark Prince, and it hands the lead roles to two of the most beloved characters in the series' history. Fans are drawn to the deep synthesis and monster-collecting loop, the option to freely swap between playing as Bianca or Nera, and a roster topping 500 creatures. A single day-one release spanning both current and previous-generation consoles plus PC also means almost no one has to wait for a port.
